Abstract:
The current movement in Congress to make businesses the social agents of the welfare state by mandating employee benefits bodes ill for American workers, minorities, consumers, and businesses. If the international experience with such laws is any guide, this back door taxation threatens to reverse the healthy trend in new job creation, raise consumer prices, and torpedo recent gains in American competitiveness.
