Abstract:
The U.S. has an important role to play in encouraging economic development and democracy in Argentina. Washington should urge Menem to continue his economic and political reforms. Specifically, the Bush Administration should encourage expanded privatization and free market reform; assist Argentina in reducing its foreign debt through such free market techniques as debt-equity swaps; increase bilateral security cooperation to combat terrorism and drug trafficking; and encourage a Argentine-British rapprochement on the Falkland Islands.
