Abstract:

The 1982 American Jewish Year Book (AJYB) contained new estimates of the Jewish population in various countries of the world at the end of 1980. The statistical tables are reprinted here. Changes have been made in one respect only. While the estimates for Jews in the 1982 AJYB related to end of 1980, the data of the general population of the respective countries reproduced the United Nations estimates as for mid-year 1979. This time the updated U.N. estimates as of mid-year 1980 have been used for the total population, and the proportion of Jews per 1000 of the respective country's total population has been recomputed accordingly.
